Hemm żewġ sinjali għal QATTUS. L-ewwel sinjal isir biż-żewġ idejn forma ta’ F bil-pala tħares lejn il-ġenb. Is-saba’ l-kbir u l-werrej jingħalqu qrib ix-xufftejn u l-id toħroġ ftit ’il barra mill-ġenb tal-wiċċ. Dan il-moviment jiġi ripetut darbtejn jew iktar u jfakkrek fil-mustaċċi tal-qattus.

It-tieni sinjal isir biż-żewġ idejn forma ta’ 5 ikkurvati bil-pala tħares ’il ġewwa u bis-swaba’ fit-tarf tax-xufftejn. Is-swaba’ jersqu lura u jerġgħu jersqu ’l quddiem xi darbtejn jew iktar qisu qed jimsaħ il-mustaċċi tal-qattus.

Is-sinjal għal FERĦ (jew qattus żgħir) huwa is-sinjal għal QATTUS u s-sinjal għal TARBIJA jew is-sinjal għal ŻGĦIR. Is-sinjali għal ŻGĦIR u għal KBIR isiru biż-żewġ idejn li jieħdu l-forma ta’ Ċ u jħarsu lejn xulxin f’linja orizzontali. Id-distanza bejn l-idejn tindika d-daqs tal-qattus. Is-sinjal għal QATTUS jiġi qabel is-sinjal għal ŻGĦIR jew KBIR.

Fil-plural, is-sinjal għal ĦAFNA jiġi wara s-sinjal għal QATTUS. Ġieli ukoll tintuża classifier. F’dan il-każ id waħda jew iż-żewġ idejn jieħdu l-forma ta’ V mgħawġa u jitpoġġew f’ħafna punti fiż-żona tas-sinjali qisu hemmhekk qed jitqiegħdu ħafna qtates.

Meta n-nom QATTUS ikun is-suġġett ta’ verb ta’ moviment, tintuża l-id bil-forma ta’ V mgħawġa bħala classifier u l-id timxi skond l-azzjoni.

There are two signs for CAT. The first sign is made with both hands in the shape of F with the palms facing the sides. The thumb and index finger close near the lips and the hand moves out to the side away from the face. This movement is repeated twice or more and is a reminder of the cat’s whiskers.

The second sign is made with both hands in the shape of curved 5 with palms facing the side and with the fingers at the edge of the lips. The fingers move backwards and then forwards again twice or more as though stroking the cat’s whiskers.

The sign for KITTEN is the sign for CAT followed by that for BABY or SMALL. The signs for SMALL and BIG are made with both hands in the shape of C facing each other horizontally. The distance between the two hands indicates the relative size of the cat. The sign for CAT is used before the sign for SMALL or BIG.

The plural is formed by adding the sign for MANY after the sign for CAT. A classifier is often used. In this case one or both hands take the shape of curved V. They are placed at various points in the signing space as though several cats were actually being put into that space.

When the noun CAT is used with a verb of movement, the curved V handshape is used as a classifier and moves accordingly.
