There are two different signs for DOLPHIN. The first sign is made with both hands in the shape of 5. One hand lies with the palm upwards and the other with the palm sideways on top of the other hand. The hand resting sideways moves up and then curves downwards and forward again two or more times. This sign resembles the dolphin jumping up from the sea.
The second sign is made with one hand in the shape of curved 5 with palm facing downwards. The hand moves up and down in a curved movement twice or more as it moves from one side to the other.
The signs for SMALL and BIG are made with both hands in the shape of Ċ, with palms facing each other in a horizontal direction. The distance between the two hands indicates the size of the dolphin. The sign for DOLPHIN is used before the sign for SMALL or BIG.
The sign for MANY is used after the sign for DOLPHIN to express the plural. A classifier is often used. In this case one or both hands take the shape of Ċ. They are placed at various points in the signing space as though several dolphins were actually being put into that space.
When the noun DOLPHIN is the subject of a verb of movement, the hand in the shape of 5 held sideways is used as the classifier and moves according to the action.
