There are two signs for SEAL. The first sign is made with slightly raised stiff shoulders and arms pressed to the torso whilst both hands move horizontally in what looks like a clap but with very loose movements controlled from the elbows rather than the wrists.
The second sign is made with both hands stretched downwards with palms facing. The hands, wrist down, move in towards each other until the wrists touch around hip level . The fingertips meet in a clapping-like movement which is repeated about three times.
Another variant is made with the hands in the Ċ shape, palms facing each other and forming the shape of a ball over the nose. The head is thrown back. This reminds one of the seal balancing a ball on its nose at a show.
The sign for SMALL or for BIG is made with both hands in the shape of C or 5, with palms facing each other in a horizontal or vertical direction. The distance between the two hands or between the hand and the ground indicates the relative size of the seal. The sign for SEAL is used before the sign for SMALL or for BIG.
The sign for MANY is used after the sign for SEAL to express the plural. In this case one or both hands in the shape of curved V is placed at various points in the signing space as classifier as though several seals were actually being put into that space.
When the noun SEAL is the subject of a verb of movement, the hand in the shape of curved V functions as the classifier. It then moves according to the action.
