Hemm żewġ sinjali għal IPPOPOTAMU. L-ewwel sinjal isir biż-żewġ idejn li jieħdu l-forma ta’ 5 bis-swaba’ miftuħin kemm kemm ikkurvati fuq quddiem. Il-pala ta’ id waħda tħares ’l isfel lejn il-pala tal-id l-oħra li tħares ’l fuq. L-id ta’ taħt tinżel ħafna ’l isfel u terġa titla’ darbtejn jew iktar.

It-tieni sinjal huwa magħmul minn żewġ partijiet: (jew i) Fl-ewwel parti jsir is-sinjal għal BAĦAR. Id waħda tieħu l-forma ta’ 5 magħluq bil-pala tħares ’l isfel u titqiegħed mal-livell ta’ l-għonq. L-id tiċċaqlaq f’linja kkurvata. (jew ii) Fit-tieni parti l-idejn jieħdu l-forma ta’ 5 kkurvat il-bogħod minn xulxin bil-pala ta’ id tħares lejn l-oħra. Imbagħad l-idejn jimxu lejn xulxin sakemm kważi jmissu u jerġgħu jitbiegħdu minn xulxin. Dan il-moviment jiġi ripetut xi darbtejn. Varjant ta’ dan is-sinjal li jsir biż-żewġ idejn forma ta’ 5 bil-pala tħares ’l isfel. L-idejn jitqiegħdu bis-swaba’ qrib xulxin taħt l-imnieħer. Dan ifakkrek fl-ippopotamu fl-ilma sa’ mnieħru.

There are two different signs for hippopotamus. The first sign is made with both hands at the front in the shape of a loosely curved 5 with fingers apart. The palms face each other, one facing downwards and the other facing upwards. The bottom hand moves down some distance and then up and down again twice or more.

The second sign is made up of two parts: (jew i) First, the sign for SEA is made. One hand, in the shape of closed 5, palm facing downwards, is placed at the level of the neck. The hand moves along in a curved line. (jew i) In the second part, both hands take on a curved 5 shape with palms facing each other but apart at opposite sides. The hands then move towards each other till they almost touch. This movement is repeated twice or more. A variant of this sign is made with both hands in the shape of 5 with palms facing downwards. The hands are placed below the nose with the fingers tightly closed. This reminds one of the hippopotamus head just above the water.

To refer to a small or large hippopotamus, the sign for SMALL or for BIG is made with one hand in the shape of 5, palm down, after the sign for HIPPOPOTAMUS. The distance between the ground and the hand indicates the relative size.

The sign for MANY is used with the sign for HIPPOPOTAMUS to express the plural. One or both hands in the shape of curved 5 are sometimes used as a classifier. The hands are placed in various places in the signing space as though placing several hippopotamuses there. When HIPPOPOTAMUS is the subject of a verb of movement, classifiers are used, moving according to the action indicated by the verb.
