Hemm żewġ sinjali differenti għal KANARIN. L-ewwel sinjal għandu żewġ partijiet. (jew i) L-ewwel isir is-sinjal ta’ GĦASFUR. Id waħda tieħu l-forma ta’ L bil-pala tal-id tħares ’il barra waqt li tgħatti l-ħalq. Is-saba’ l-kbir u l-werrej jingħalqu u jinfetħu ħafif ħafif darbtejn jew iktar. (jew ii) Għat-tieni parti l-id tieħu l-forma ta’ 5 kkurvata u ddur magħha nnifisha fil-ġenb tal-wiċċ.
It-tieni sinjal ukoll għandu l-istess l-ewwel parti. Imbagħad, id waħda timtedd bil-pala tħares ’l isfel waqt li l-werrej tal-id l-oħra jinżel ’l isfel għal fuq il-polz ta’ l-ewwel id u ddur f’ċirku żgħir fuq il-polz.
Għal kanarin żgħir jew kbir, l-ewwel jintuża s-sinjal għal KANARIN imbagħad jintuża s-sinjal għal ŻGĦIR jew KBIR. Is-sinjal għal ŻGĦIR u għal KBIR isir bl-idejn forma ta’ 1, iħarsu lejn xulxin f’linja djagonali jew vertikali. Id-distanza bejn is-swaba’ tindika d-daqs tal-kanarin.
Għall-plural, is-sinjal għal ĦAFNA jiġi wara s-sinjal għal KANARIN. Kultant l-ewwel parti tas-sinjal tiġi ripetuta kemm-il darba ħdejn il-wiċċ u lil hemm minnu. Dan jirreferi għal kant kważi bla waqfien tal-kanarin.
Meta n-nom KANARIN ikun is-suġġett ta’ verb ta’ moviment is-sinjal għal KANARIN jibdel il-forma tiegħu fis-sentenza. Normalment l-ewwel parti tas-sinjal tintuża bħala classifier. Kultant tintuża l-id forma ta’ X bħala classifier.
There are two different signs for CANARY. The first sign has two parts: (jew i) First, the sign for BIRD is made, that is, the hand takes the L shape with palm facing out in front of the mouth. The thumb and the index finger move in a light closing and opening movement twice or more. (jew ii) The second part is made with the hand at the side of the face in a curved 5 shape and rotates round without leaving its place.
The second sign has the same first part. Then, one hand lies with palm facing downwards whilst the index finger of the other hand moves down over and goes round in a small circle over the wrist of the first hand.
For a small or large canary, the sign for CANARY is followed by the sign for SMALL or for BIG. The sign for SMALL and the sign for BIG is made with the hands in the shape of 1 with palms facing in a diagonal or vertical direction. The distance between the hands indicates the size of the canary.
The sign for MANY is used after the sign for CANARY to signal plurality. Sometimes the first part of the sign is repeated near or away from the face. This refers to the canary’s reputation for singing almost endlessly.
When the noun CANARY is the subject of a verb of movement the first part of the sign can appear as the classifier. The hand in the shape of X often functions as a classifier in other instances.
