There are two signs for LION. The first sign has two parts. (jew i) Both hands take the shape of curved 5. The hands move in two or three half circles from the top side of the head till they reach neck level. This reminds one of the lion’s mane. (jew ii) Then one hand, in the same shape of curved 5, moves in a half circle from one side as the palm faces the other side and ends up in front of the chest with the palm facing inwards. The shape of the mouth forms part of the sign – the lips separate whilst the teeth are held together.
The second sign is older. It is made with the hands in the shape of curved 5 placed in front at shoulder level, with palms facing outwards. The hands make a curved movement slightly upwards and out, like the lion about to attack.
The sign for CUB is made up of the sign for LION and the sign for BABY or for SMALL. The sign for SMALL or the sign for BIG are made with one hand in the shape of 5, palm down. The distance between the ground and the hand indicates the relative size of the lion. These signs are used after the sign for LION.
The sign for MANY is used with the sign for LION to express the plural. A classifier is often used. In this case one hand in the shape of curved V is placed at various points in the signing space as though several lions were actually being put into that space.
When the noun LION is the subject of a verb of movement, one hand in the shape of curved V or curved 5 is used as the classifier and moves according to the action indicated by the verb.
