There are two signs for SHEEP. The first sign is made with both hands in the shape of X. The hands move from the side of the head above ear level in two curves downwards and outwards towards the sides.

The second sign is made with one or two hands in the shape of 1, palm facing the side of the head, and the index finger making a circular movement around the side of the head. This represents the sheep’s curly coat.

The sign for BABY or SMALL is used after the sign for SHEEP, depending on the sentence, to refer to a lamb. The sign for SMALL or the sign for LARGE is made with the hand in the shape of 5 with palm facing the ground. The distance between the hand and the ground indicates the size of the sheep. These signs are used after the sign for SHEEP.

The plural is formed by adding the sign for MANY after the sign for SHEEP. A classifier is often used. In this case one or both hands in the shape of curved V is placed at various points in the signing space as though several sheep were actually being put into that space.

When the noun SHEEP is used as the subject of a verb of movement, the hand in the shape of curved V is used as a classifier and moves accordingly.
