There are two signs for SNAKE. The first sign is made with the hand in the shape of 1 with the palm facing inwards or sideways and the arm lying down at the elbow. The finger moves in a curved line to the right and then to the left twice or more whilst edging forward. This resembles the way the snake moves along the ground.
The second sign is made up of two parts. The first part is used for an ordinary snake; the second part is used for a poisonous snake. (jew i) In the first part, the hand is in the shape of 1 lying with the index finger winding towards the other side. (jew ii) In the second part, the hand lies horizontally and the elbow of the other hand rests on it in a vertical position. This second hand is in a curved V shape. The V stands for “velenu” (jew poison).
The sign for SMALL or the sign for BIG is made with two hands in the shape of Ċ in a diagonal direction. The distance between the hands indicates the relative size of the snake. The sign for SNAKE precedes the sign for SMALL or BIG.
The sign for MANY is used after the sign for SNAKE to indicate the plural. A classifier is often used. In this case, one or both hands in the shape of 1 lying with the palm face the body diagonally. The hands are placed at various points in the signing space as though several snakes were being placed there.
When the noun SNAKE is used as the subject of a verb of movement, one or both hands take the shape of 1 lying with the palms facing the body diagonally. This becomes the classifier and moves according to the action of the verb.
