The sign for SYNOD consists of two parts. (i) The first part is the sign for BISHOP. This is made with both hands in the shape of closed 5. The two hands then move up together and meet over the head. (ii) The second part is the sign for MEETING. This is made with both hands in the shape of L (for ‘laqgħa’ in Maltese) with the palm facing sideways or outwards and with the thumbs touching. The hands move round to form a circle on the horizontal plane. The small fingers touch and the palms face inwards once the circle is completed.
